Vocabulary & Phrases

We are going to teach you how to say some opposites in Portuguese.

  • Day and Night. Dia e Noite (jee-ah, e, Noi-chee)

  • Big and Small. Grande e Pequeno.(Grahn-jee, e, Pe-qeno)

  • Tall and Short. Alto e Baixo.(Awl-to, e, By-shoo)

Interesting Facts

Let me tell you about a Brazilian national hero they call Tiradentes (pronounced Cheeda-den-cheese).

  • He was a dentist and his nickname means ā€œTooth-puller.ā€

  • He fought for Brazilian independence from Portugal.

  • He was inspired by the American Revolution.

  • His plan was discovered because one of the members of their group betrayed them and told the Portuguese government.

  • He was hung and quartered (which means his body was chopped up). Then his body was shipped out to different parts of Brazil to show them that if you try to rebel, this is what happens.

  • This helped people realize how much more they needed independence. Years later Brazil got their independence, and now they consider him one of their heroes.

  • April 21st is a national holiday in honor of him.

In Closing

I had a great time with my grandparents. We went to the beach but sadly, we didn’t really have any sun. They had just come from Canada and they were looking forward to the warm sun. The revival was great. All the words my grandpa gave people in our church were exactly what they needed. We also went to Curitiba and stayed at this really cool and fancy hotel (we learned our lesson from last time). They had some delays getting here, and one of their flights was cancelled when they left, but they made it. We had a great time.
